Join Sara Fern Fitzsimmons of the The American Chestnut Foundation for a workshop on how to control pollinate the American chestnut. The workshop will take place at Edge of the Woods Native Plant Nursery, in our chestnut orchard. The orchard is comprised of wild-type American chestnuts, and does not contain any genetically modified trees, or trees that are hybrid back-crosses with the Chinese or Asian Chestnut.
Sara will spend 30 to 45 minutes showcasing various items related to the American Chestnut. During this portion, you will learn about the breeding work of The American Chestnut Foundation. They are working actively to restore the American chestnut to the forests of the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. Because we will be holding this workshop outside, bring a folding chair if you would like to be seated.
Following the introduction, Sara will walk participants through the pollination process. After that, she will bring orchard ladders for anyone who would like to climb into the tree for a close-up view of pollination.
