Genus Spotlight – Amelanchier

There are several species of  Serviceberry.  They all bloom in spring, set fruit in summer, and have a lovely soft yellow fall color.  Some species have tinges of red and orange in fall.  The fruits are tasty, like soft sweet blueberries.  Songbirds and small mammals also love them.  Flowers are valuable to various early season pollinators.  Blooming white at about the same time as Callery Pear,  it is a good alternative to this invasive tree.

Serviceberry are generally somewhat resistant to deer browse and are native to Pennsylvania.  They prefer moist soil and are not typically drought tolerant.
