Species Spotlight – Magnolia macrophylla
Big-Leaved Magnolia Magnolia macrophylla
This is an impressive species with massive foliage and flowers! Of all North American native flora, this species has the largest single leaf and single flower of them all. The leaves tend to be over 2ft long on a mature specimen, with some individuals having leaves over 3 feet long! Amazing! The flowers are huge, like the size of a face, and smell like an entire bottle of sweet perfume. Such a neat plant! Grows 30-40 feet tall, typically. Though it can be pruned and maintained as a large shrub or smaller tree.
