A must have garden plant.
Pycnanthemum virginianum
This easy-care, deer resistant, perennial is a must-have for any pollinator garden. It attracts insects, butterflies, and moths. Songbirds, which rely on insects, will appreciate this plant in your garden. Birds also use the dormant stems for nesting material.
The small white flowers rise above lower plants in our garden, creating a ‘mist’ of white that will provide an enchanting effect in a moon garden. The plant is highly aromatic, you can smell its minty scent when you brush past it. Its leaves can be used in teas.
It grows to two or three feet tall in almost any soil from clay to gravelly. It prefers moist to average soil, and copes with drought by dropping its lower leaves. Full sun is best.
This plant is a native to Pennsylvania, is of special value to native bees, and attracts predatory and parasitoid insects that prey upon pest insects.
